FareShare: Fighting Food Waste and Feeding Communities

Logistics for Good: Why Hatmill Is Proud to Support FareShare in 2024/2025

As part of Hatmill’s commitment to social impact, we’re proud to support FareShare as one of our chosen charities for 2024/2025. Originally nominated by Shaun D’Arcy, FareShare received a portion of 1% of our profits from FYI 2023/2024—helping them continue their vital work tackling food poverty and reducing food waste across the UK.

“I nominated FareShare because their mission really resonated with me—turning surplus food into meals for people who need it most. It’s a smart, practical solution to a big social challenge, and I knew it was something our team would get behind.” — Shaun D’Arcy

What Does FareShare Do?

FareShare is the UK’s largest charity fighting hunger and food waste. Their mission is simple but powerful: to redistribute good-quality surplus food from across the food industry to frontline charities and community groups. These organisations then turn it into nutritious meals for vulnerable people—including families facing hardship, older adults at risk of isolation, and individuals experiencing homelessness.

In 2023–2024, FareShare redistributed over 56,000 tonnes of food, reaching nearly 1 million people through a network of 8,000 local charities. Every tonne of food saved prevents around 2 tonnes of CO₂e emissions, making their work both socially and environmentally impactful.

Hatmill’s Volunteering Experience

Earlier this year, a group of Hatmill colleagues spent the day volunteering at one of FareShare’s warehouses in Barnsley—sorting crates, packing deliveries, and seeing the operation in action. It was a hands-on reminder of how logistics can drive real social change. The experience sparked conversations about food waste, sustainability, and how businesses like ours can play a role in supporting communities.

Why FareShare Aligns with Hatmill’s Values

FareShare’s work reflects many of the values we hold at Hatmill: operational excellence, sustainability, and inclusion. By supporting FareShare through both financial contributions and volunteering, we’re helping to build a more equitable and efficient supply chain—one that serves people as well as profit.
