Empowering Young Lives: Hatmill’s Support for Leicester Hospitals Charity this World Diabetes Day

Today, on 14 November, the world has come together to raise awareness for World Diabetes Day — a day that hits close to home for us at Hatmill.

Gareth's Story

Earlier this year, Gareth Powell’s daughter, Hattie, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and cared for by the incredible team at Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI). The hospital’s paediatric diabetes team used toys — including teddy bears fitted with blood glucose monitors and insulin pumps — to help Hattie understand how her own devices worked.

What could have been a frightening experience became something Hattie could see, touch, and understand. As her mum, Katie, told the BBC:

“Thanks to the bear and the special games, Hattie has really quickly become familiar with a new routine. She knows she needs insulin before meals, and that when her monitor’s alarm goes off we need to take action. Quite quickly, she’s taken it in her stride.”

Following this experience, Hatmill chose to support Leicester Hospitals Charity through our annual donation, with funds going towards the Highs and Lows group — a programme that helps young patients learn to manage their diabetes in supportive, inclusive spaces.

Leicester Hospitals Charity said:

“Thanks to donations from businesses such as Hatmill, children are not only learning how to manage their diabetes, but are taking ownership of their condition. Because of your generosity, children attending the Highs and Lows group can gain support from peers and clinicians in spaces that are fun and inclusive.”

We’re proud that our contribution helps Leicester’s hospitals continue to provide the best possible care for children like Hattie — and helps families navigate life after diagnosis with knowledge, confidence and community.
