Terry Murphy’s career in supply chain and logistics
Terry Murphy’s distinguished career in Supply Chain and Logistics spans an impressive four decades, marked by innovation, strategic leadership, and transformative contributions to the industry. His exceptional accomplishments and unwavering dedication make him a deserving candidate for the Sir Robert Lawrence Award.
Before joining Hatmill, Terry held significant roles with some of the UK’s largest brands. During his 11 years at John Lewis, Terry significantly impacted the supply chain network, developing and executing a comprehensive strategy that redefined the company’s logistics capabilities. This included developing two highly automated facilities, showcasing Terry’s forward-thinking approach to technology. These initiatives now underpin a network serving both John Lewis’s extensive retail estate and its burgeoning £1.5 billion online business, with three-quarters of deliveries fulfilled next day.
At Currys/DSGi, Terry redeveloped the Home Delivery network, transitioning from 23 stocked customer delivery depots to a centralised, 750k sq ft warehouse. This hub-and-spoke model dramatically improved efficiency, enabling 24-hour lead times and seven-day-a-week operations.
Since joining Hatmill, Terry has continued to demonstrate his versatility and commitment to excellence. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was on the ground from the outset, ensuring that PPE was identified, tested, and distributed to the front line. He played a crucial role in setting up the highly successful UK vaccine supply chain.
Supporting the next generation in logistics
Beyond his professional achievements, Terry actively supports the development of the logistics industry. He is an active member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and a contributor to Generation Logistics. Terry also mentors many young leaders, both formally and informally, fostering the growth of the next generation of logistics professionals.
