Hatmill donation supports The Clothing Bank
Hatmill has donated 1% of its 2022/2023 profits to six deserving charities, chosen by the team.
In the final blog shining a spotlight on the charities we’ve supported this year, Sophie Rushbrooke, a consultant at Hatmill shares more about the charity she put forward: The Clothing Bank
The Clothing Bank
Susan Bell and Sally Parkinson set up The Clothing Bank in 2020 in Wakefield. They saw a need from people who were struggling to clothe themselves or their families given the rise in the cost of living. They collect good quality clothing to provide for those who need it.
Initially set up in a carport, the demand for their services increased and thanks to a National Lottery grant and local fundraising, The Clothing Bank Cabin was created. It is run by a team of volunteers and supported by an engaged community who donate clothes and act as volunteer drop off points as well as sharing clothing appeals on social media.
Last year over 7500 people were supported with quality clothing and new underwear. At Christmas time, the charity provides new pajamas and a special outfit to children in need.
As the profile of The Clothing Bank has grown, requests for support have come from across the country. The charity has ambitious plans to grow so that it can help more people. They are looking for retailers to come onboard with end of line clothing. And they want to get schools onboard to talk to pupils about how clothing poverty affects others.
From an environmental perspective, by collecting pre-loved clothing and redistributing it back into the community, it saves it going into landfill.
Susan Bell and Sally Parkinson, Founders of The Clothing Bank said:
“Clothing poverty in the UK hits the poorest and most vulnerable people in society. Thanks to Hatmill for their generous donation. These funds will be used towards a new clothing store so that we can provide quality clothing to more families in need.”
The six charities were put forward by team members and individuals voted as to which ones they wanted to support. The unanimous team decision was to support the charities below:
