Hatmill shines a spotlight on The Family Centre
Supporting deaf children and their families
To mark the International Day of Sign Languages, we’re spotlighting The Family Centre (Deaf Children), one of Hatmill’s chosen charities for 2026/27.
The charity has received a £5,000 donation as part of the 1% of its annual profits Hatmill gives to charitable causes.
Helping families feel informed, included and connected
The Family Centre is a small, local charity supporting families living with childhood deafness across Bristol and the surrounding area.
It provides information and advice, BSL lessons and workshops, peer support and a variety of accessible activities for children, young people and their families.
Its services help families improve communication, build supportive relationships and connect with other people who understand their experiences. The charity also helps deaf children and young people develop their confidence, self-esteem and deaf identity.
The Family Centre was nominated by our colleague Andy Wood after it directly supported a close friend and their six-month-old baby.
Andy said:
“The Family Centre has helped a close friend and their young baby connect with other families in the same position. It’s a small, local charity making a direct difference to families in our city, which is why I wanted to nominate it for Hatmill’s support.”
What Hatmill’s support will mean
Our donation will help FCDC continue delivering its support services for local children with hearing loss and their families. It will also provide important match funding for its five-year National Lottery Community Fund project, Improving the Lives of Deaf Children and their Families 2024–2029.
Neil Curry, Chair of the Board of Trustees at The Family Centre, said:
“This donation will provide essential funding for the effective delivery of our support services for local children with hearing loss and their families. In addition, it will also provide vital match funding that we require to successfully deliver our National Lottery Community Fund five-year project.”
Neil added that knowing the charity had been nominated by someone with close knowledge of its services was “very gratifying and particularly rewarding” for its frontline team.
