Joshua Polding

I joined Hatmill in April 2024 after 3 years in Fulfilment Operations and Continuous Improvement for THG. Completing an MBA whilst working has given me a depth of theoretical and practical knowledge across several business sectors, which I can now apply to future business solution designs.

Proven record of scoping, designing and delivering projects for automation and operational integration, alongside process improvement, optimization and cost-reduction.

After graduating in 2012 from Lancaster University, and spending 4 years in Business Management, COVID-19 gave me an opportunity to dynamically shift my career. Moving into fulfilment operations and commencing an MBA set me on a pathway to hone my skillsets to be tailored to continuous improvement, and now consulting.

Holding a critical stance on inherent ways of working, and learning from both theory and practice, enabled me to scope and deliver numerous projects to date prior to joining Hatmill.

Highlights of my career thus far include:

  • Launch and integration of 2 Autostore automation systems to live fulfilment operations.
  • Theoretical modelling of robotic behaviour leading to design, procurement and installation of supporting infrastructure to an Autostore automated operation, allowing for scalability of operational output for high demand periods.
  • Design and implementation of an optimized packaging profile for fulfilment operations, including the use of a letterbox packing method, creating a £800k YoY saving through direct
    and indirect costs.
  • Scoping, testing and installation of streamlined decant operations using weighing scales, to increase throughput whilst maintaining stock integrity.
  • Ergonomic redesign of operational station layouts using time and motion studies to minimise wasted movement, aiming to increase output rates.
  • Design and implementation of a performance management matrix, and training of management to its use/purpose, resulting in a 25% rate increase YoY.
  • Data analysis and presentation of findings to SLT on labour models for shift pattern changes, aiming to streamline AGY labour requirements.

I now bring this experience and critical mindset to Hatmill, where I will continue learning, challenging myself and most importantly, deliver results for current and future clients.

By challenging the status quo, I have been able to unveil and create opportunities for process optimization and cost reduction in various segments of fulfilment operations.

By improving their demand forecast, we helped one client save £3m in agency staffing costs (that’s an 18% reduction).
