Chris Marrow

I joined Hatmill in April 2024, bringing with me over three decades of extensive experience in both third-party and in-house logistics roles within the retail and manufacturing sectors. Throughout my career, I have held leadership positions at prominent organisations such as Safeway, Sainsbury’s, M&S, and Home Bargains, leading transformative initiatives within the logistics functions. These roles encompassed the design, procurement, and execution of large-scale operational enhancements aligned with each company’s growth strategies in addition to managing the day-to day operational performance.

At Hatmill we can design and develop a fit for purpose long term logistics solution and have the team to lead the implementation and support the transition.

The unique approach to the organisational structure of Hatmill, characterised by self-managing teams and no formal hierarchy as an employee-owned enterprise, presented an exceptional opportunity for me. Allowing me to continue my professional development while leveraging my experience to support both our team and our customers.

My career journey began in third-party logistics at TDG now part of GXO, where I entered as a management trainee. After eight years I progressed to my first General Manager appointment, overseeing operations at Cadbury’s NDC in Birmingham. Notable milestones include my move to Hays Distribution into my first regional leadership position, where I managed multiple distribution centres in their Food Service Network and then at Safeway where in 2003, I was promoted to the Supply Chain Leadership Team. In 2006 I joined Sainsbury’s where we went through a significant transformation of the logistics network to support the growth of Convenience, General Merchandise and Clothing both in-store and on-line. In 2015, I was promoted to the role of Director of Logistics, overseeing a network comprising 22 Secondary Distribution Centres and a Primary operation, employing over 13,000 colleagues across both in-house and third-party operations. Following my time at Sainsbury’s, I joined M&S in 2020 before serving on the board at TJ Morris (Home Bargains).

I also served on the board of the CILT for 3 years and the Supply Chain Advisory Board at Cranfield School of Management.

By improving their demand forecast, we helped one client save £3m in agency staffing costs (that’s an 18% reduction).
