Shaw Travis

I joined Hatmill after 18 years managing logistics automation projects, and a similar period in manufacturing industry. During 11 years at Amazon, I project managed the build of 4 new fulfilment centres and circa 15 significant capacity upgrades. Moving on to Tesco, I designed food and non-food customer fulfilment centres.
I have managed automation projects for integrators Honeywell, Dematic, Daifuku, Siemens Logistics, Caljan, Bowe-Systec – with my work taking me to Canada, across the USA, and to many European countries.

Always identify with your customer and align with their values and needs. Do not lose sight of their perspective when you define your objectives and execute your plans.

My experience in manufacturing industry proved to be a good grounding when I joined Amazon in 2005.  At that time Amazon had 1 site in the UK, but was growing rapidly.  Money was tight and project deadlines were fixed.  These constraints breed resourcefulness in an environment where customer satisfaction is paramount.

During my time with Amazon, the UK fulfilment capacity grew 20-fold.  I project managed the design and build of 4 new FCs and circa 15 significant capacity upgrades, accounting for 40% of the UK fulfilment capacity at that time.

I went on to join Tesco who then offered direct fulfilment as a rival offering to Amazon.  I managed a capacity expansion project for the UK direct fulfilment site.   As part of a plan to upgrade and automate their internal supply chain, I designed the upgrade to their Dublin distribution centre to cater for frozen, chill, ambient foods, and to include a van delivery hub for the Dublin area. After Tesco, I have worked primarily for automation integrators.

Link 51 – installation of 56,000 shelving bays into the Amazon FC in Lille, France.
The project had lost direction and had slipped badly on timescale and cost.  Link 51brought me in part-way through – with the remit to stabilise the project, prevent further slippage, and to manage the project through to completion.

Honeywell Intelligrated – working at their new European office
Development of the operational capability for the European office, a new venture for the US-based company.  I spent time working out of their US facility, providing project management/ commissioning support on new-build Amazon automated fulfilment centres in Nevada and Tennessee.

Caljan – Director of Solutions & Projects
Design and delivery of depot automation systems, primarily for UK parcel carriers.
Development of Caljan’s depot automation offering, to include strategic partnerships with automation providers to offer automated labelling and parcel sortation

I have managed automation projects for integrators Dematic, Daifuku, Siemens Logistics, Bowe-Systec for clients Amazon, Royal Mail, Fedex, SSENSE – with my work taking me to Canada, USA, and many European countries.

In addition, a further 15 significant FC capacity expansion projects.
  • A broad experience of managing logistics automation projects, both as the client’s project manager, and acting for the integrator.
  • Manufacturing experience; white goods design, high-precision CNC machining, first-tier automotive, wastewater treatment plant design, medical electronics
  • Zero RIDDOR occurrences across all projects I have managed.

The client will understand how their business works, their capabilities, and their challenges. This knowledge, together with the company’s values, is a key input into defining both the project objectives and the roadmap to achieve them.

By improving their demand forecast, we helped one client save £3m in agency staffing costs (that’s an 18% reduction).
